My aggressive journey to say a few words. (AKA) I'll be saying stuff that won't matter to many of you but it'll ALL mean something to me.

What is wrong with this world? Am I just stupid or was the U.S. Constituition written while under the influence of a God fearing belief?

If the constition was written under those principles than why do the people who are also God fearing, have to refrain from using his holy name in public? People honestly wanted to change our 200+ year old pledge just because it includes the word God. And what's even worse is that I have to sit back and listen to people curse while using God's name. Maybe I'm just a crazy christian that is too blind to no the difference, but I don't think that's it.

I have the strangest feeling our forefathers didn't mean that you can't practice religion in the U.S. just that you can't FORCE your religion upon someone. Saying the pledge is not forcing christian ethics upon anyone, it's just asking Americans to have some respect for their country.

Gays can get married, legally, now. All I have to say about this one is, keep them out of court rooms and churches when doing this, because the church is (or at least mine is) against homosexual marriages. Then you have the court rooms which have the american flag right in your face.

If you haven't noticed yet, I'm a christian and I can't stand the fact that we are letting people like this get away with what they are doing. You don't see me going around yelling at people for not praying, so why yell at me FOR praying? I'm not even speaking for crying out loud.

Oh, and then there's schools... This sucks big one's! You don't have to pledge anymore and the principal can't ask you to take time to pray and/or meditate. I remember, in 3rd grade, we would always do morning pledge and then the moment of silence for prayer or meditation. It was harmless. If you don't want to pray, you had time to sit and think. If you wanted to pray and not feel weird you could. Suddenly, out of nowhere we weren't aloud to do those things anymore. Now, to pray you look like a freak and everyone thinks your a loser that doesn't deserve to have friends.

So, what am I? Am I an idiot for even thinking that God is good? Maybe that's why we're having so much trouble in this world now. People won't accept that God isn't a word to bind you into one religion, but a word to symbolize the greatness of our country... if you won't accept it as a holy being. Or perhaps I'm a psychotic homophobe who can't even function in the same world as a homosexual or bisexual (no real dif.).

Capt. over and out!

It is more like we can get into trouble if we get caught at least that is what one of the teachers said to us.

That is total bologna....as a former teacher, and a parent of current school students, I can assure you that individual, or even group, prayer and/or religious discussion is not allowed to be stopped as long as no school personnel are involved in the leadership of it, and as long as no other student is being forced to take part. As a teacher, I used to take my Bible to school with me every day, and read it on my lunch break, and during my free period...also perfectly legal.

right, poet. Anyway, capt's original statement was very clearly worded as to his concern of PEERS viewing him praying.

To that, capt, I will say this...if your faith isn't strong enough to withstand some criticism, you might want to take a closer look at it.

I had wanted to say that, but in more colorful terms....

That's what I'd have to say as well.  If you're that worried about being seen praying, if it bothers you that bad...well, dude, how deep is your conviction?  You should never, ever be ashamed of your faith, ever.

capt and carebear,If you are concerned about what your fellow classmates will think of you when you pray in school, I have suggested reading for you.

am pretty sure it isn't because they are concerned about what other people think of them. I know them and they don't care. It is more like we can get into trouble if we get caught at least that is what one of the teachers said to us. So we have to be careful but i don't care. If i want or need to pray for something right then and there then i do.

Get "in trouble"? Didn't the disciples in Acts talk about following God rather than man?

I think you should all know that for one I am not afraid to pray in school. If I would happent to get in trouble, then so be it. I would take the risk of getting caught praying any day. And I know that Capt. would too. He is not ashamed of his faith and neither am I. I've never head of teachers yelling at us Jess, but I do know that it isn't allowed. But I really don't give a monkey's butt.

IV: ADVICE TO THE PERSECUTED

Trial of Persecution

Beloved, do not be surprised that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as if something rejoice to the extent that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice exultantly. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. But let no one among you be made to suffer as a murderer, a theif, and evildoer, or as an intriguer. But whoever is made to suffer as a Christian should not be ashamed but glorify God because of the name. For it is time for the judgment to begin with the household of God; if it begins with us, how will it end for those who fail to obey the gospel of God?

"And if the righteous one is barely
saved,
where will the godless and the siner appear?"

As a result, those who suffer in accord with God's will hand their souls over to a faithful creator as they do good.

Peter 4: 12-19

Matthew 6 : 5 - 6

"And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. "

If God didn't want people to be gay, then he wouldn't make them that way in the first place, IMO

exactly.  cut out the middle man (and woman) so to speak

You can't pray silently to yourself?

I know that you can and i do a lot. But even if i get down and pray i don't care if people talk about me. I am proud of my religion and i don't care who knows it. I don't care if my peers think i am weird or anything. Capt. think about what means more to you what your peers think or praying if you want to in praying position.

Okay I think this utterly ridiculous - 174 comments

You guys (teens) complain that the adults are persecuting you - blaming you - that they don't understand etc -- for one you're not even listeing to them - you're only hearing what you want to hear and its being taken completely out of context in my opinion.

Look it's great that you all love God - and believe in Jesus - and that's enough.

I don't have a very good grasp on the laws and regulations in America because I'm Australian but I don't think they can stop you from praying - I think Dharma pasted some links to this very issue.

I don't think you'd get in trouble for praying at school unless it was at in inappropriate time - like mid-class. That said I've never read anything but having to only pray on your hands and knees with your hands clasped and your eyes closed -- I don't think I've ever prayed like that (minus the eyes closed part)
Look if you're worried about people seeing you pray then you have bigger problems then whether you'd get in trouble or not. Prayer is communication with Our Father - our dad - it's a chat with the one who created us - it's a whispered thought to the Man who gives us Life. And it's a silent affirmation of YOUR personal faith -- I think it's fantastic that all of you are friends and that you all know and love God in your own ways
Capt the Baptist, Carebear the Catholic, Zoo the Christian with no church.

I think it was shades 100 posts among Gideon and Dharma who talked about the ability to have FAITH without a Church -- You should always question what you've been taught -- there are 1000 different religions with many of the same views and many differences -- They can't all be right - You should seek your own truths with the help of God.

I don't think I have any idea about what I think about the homosexual issue - but I do know that it isn't my place to judge - it is my place to LOVE and to spread the Gospel of Jesus's love and not just through my words but through my actions - the bible says loosely translated that what we do to our fellow man - we do to Christ --- He talks about that whenever we give a begger money or someone food and shelter we're doing that for Jesus -- and when we turn someone away -- we're turning Jesus away -- it doesn't matter if they're gay, straight, black, white, yellow, christian jew buddist, athesiat or moslem.

I know that anytime I have a closed heart - that I'm depriving the world of Jesus love - I've missed an opportunity to share the light that Jesus love burns inside me.

And YOU are too - by taking the offensive, by insulting others and by ineffect ignoring and failing to respect others beliefs and opinions REGARDLESS of how they're treating you - you're failing to be the bigger person and failing to shine a little light on their life.

READ Jesus Freaks -- if you've read them then read them AGAIN because they're fantastic examples of people willing to die for their faith - people who prayed for their persecutors.

Sorry if i'm being a bit blunt right now -- there are far more important issues in the world then Who chooses (or doesn't) to SLEEP with who and why!
My best friend has been diagnosed with Leukemia and I didn't hesitate to pray for her - I prayed for her on Joeuser, I prayed for her on then phone and I prayed for her in the Holy Spirit in her hospital room.
on Aug 08, 2004
you are right that there are more important issues in life then that. You have had the chance to see what one of those issues are. I feel very sorry for what happened to your friend. I hope she gets better. I agree with your whole comment pretty much. I hope you keep writing like this.

Nobody had to SAY it....we can read it. Some of the comments made by  teens on this thread have been very condescending toward the beliefs of others.

Yes, they have.  You ask other people to respect your faith, but yet you won't return the favor.

As Trina said, you have dismissed all the advice given thus far, or have found a reason to not do it.  Bottom line is this:  you cannot, no matter what your teacher says, get into trouble for praying at school. I honestly think that you want there to be a time set aside for public prayer so that you can blend in with all the other students that are praying and not draw attention to yourself by praying alone.

I don't think I can remember when I insulted another just because they have a different religion.
